About EEG
Electroencephalography (EEG) is a non-invasive brain imaging technique, which records the electrical activity of your brain. For this, a cap with 128 electrodes is soaked in a solution of salt, baby shampoo and water for a few minutes prior to being placed on your head. The cap is then attached to amplifiers and the electrical activity of your brain recorded while you are performing a task. The task are varied and range from passive viewing of stimuli, judging particular features of visual, auditory or tactile stimuli to communicating with another person. An overview of the technique will be described to you prior to the experiment if this is your first time.
FAQ about EEG:
- we record the electrical activity of your brain i.e. EEG does not induce any current in your brain
- some important requirements: right-handed individuals only, no history of brain injury, seizures, epilepsy etc...
- EEG is non-invasive (not painful) but you will have to remain as still as possible for minutes at a time which can be uncomfortable. Plenty of break times are provided.
- avoid wearing metal (jewelry, piercing, etc) on the day of the experiment
- avoid using hair product such as conditioner or gel on the day of the experiment
- have a good night of rest prior to the experiment!
