The California Institute of Technology routinely uses human subjects in various experiments. We need your help in three kinds of experiments:
- Behavioral experiments: you will be asked to perform certain tasks, usually in front of a computer
- EEG experiments: you will be asked to perform certain tasks, while hooked to an EEG recorder
- Scanner experiments: you will be asked to perform certain tasks, inside an MRI machine (it records your brain activity)
Important note:
The experiments we run are very expensive. When subjects do not show up at their scheduled times, we usually have to pay a very high fee ($300+ per hour) even though we cannot run our experiment. If for any reason you need to reschedule, contact the experimenter as soon as possible; if you do not cancel in time, your may be barred for participating in the future. If you are a member of the general public:
Because these experiments usually take from 1 to 2 hours, we pay you for your time, usually between $15 and $50 per hour. Payment is usually made in cash, at the end. The tasks vary and you should always ask the experimenter for details about the tasks and the payment schedule.
There are several requirements for participation in fMRI experiments. You must be above 18 and if you are going to be scanned (MRI), you must not have any metal in your body (more information). Other requirements may apply. Once again, the researcher will be able to tell you more regarding a specific experiment. We have also an information page on EEG experiments.

How to get here
Experiments usually take place in the basement of the Broad Center, at Caltech. However, the location will vary and the experimenter will tell you exactly where to go. It is located at the corner of Del Mar and Wilson (Google maps), in the building 96 on the campus map (pdf). Some experimenters provide free parking passes. Contact them directly for more information.
